ARCTIC HOTEL english

The northernmost four star hotel of the world

Greenland

WHY YOU SHOULD GO THERE

On the western shores of Greenland more than 200 miles north the arctic cirle there is Greenland`s biggest bay: the incredible Disko Bay where large icebergs meet whales. The next little town is Ilulissat, Jakobshavn in Danish, and close to it the Ilulissat Icefjord, part of the Unesco´s World Herigae List since summer 2024. It is something like a giant iceberg factory. The Icefjord is home to one of the largest and most active glaciers in the world – its 3,000 km2 mass moves forward by approximately 40 metres a day. The glacier calves off approximately 10% of all the icebergs that drift out to sea from Greenland and is unmatched by any other glacier in the world.

WHAT GREENLAND´S BEST HOTEL OFFERS

Greenland – as big as whole Africa – has less than 60.000 inhabitants, the capital Nuuk is a sleepy town, so when it comes to accomodation it is not a posh city five star hotel you expect, but the best nature experience combined with comfort and good food. In 1984 Air Greenland started flights to the then new little airport of Ilulissat and they need a place for their passengers and their crews to stay. That is why the hotel ARCTIC was built and opened in the same year. It´s a true 4-star hotel with 56 rooms and 15 “aurora cabins” and it is not only the best hotel in Ilulisaat but in whole Greenland. The free transfer to the hotel from the ship or the plane you arrived is very convenient. The lobby looks a bit like in a youth hostel but the rooms are clean and offer a  good standard. They are located in three different wings, Puisi, Qajaq and Umiaq. I recommend to book a Superior room, not the standard one, with a nice view to the sea and the icebergs floating by. These rooms are in Qajaq and Umiaq wings. If you imagine that you stay in a place surrounded by icebergs it is in a way remarkable – if not luxury -to have room service, laundry service, freee wi-Fi, TV with international channels, underfloor heating in the bathroom, and moreover two dining options (a brasserie and a gourmet fish restaurant), a bar, and a little shop. And not to forget the prime location. The hotel ARCTIC is located outside of Ilulissat on a rock. The new Aurora cabins near the water are the top of the line rooms. These glass ceiled little houses offer breathtaking views of the Disko Bay and they enable the guests a special experience in winter time, the time of the Northern lights. Shielded from the Arctic chill one can watch the nightly sky without freezing from head to toe. The hotel also has a five star conference center but for most tourists this will not be the attraction of the place. All in all highly recommendable and take sea view in any case.

From around 180 Euro to 800 (for Aurora cabins)

Indicative – subject to change.

Avoid standard room. Superior room: Value for money. Umiaq Junior Suite: Best view of icebergs and the fjord from the main building. Aurora cabins: best choice in winter.
Getting there
Now: Flights to Greenland´s main airport Kangerlussuaq or to Nuuk and then a connecting flight to Ilulissat. There is also a direct flight to Reykjavik. NEWS: Currently a new airport is built and from 2025 direct international flights will be possible.
Best Excursion

*A MUST:  a boat trip to the Icefjord to see the biggest icebergs you can imagine.

*Icefjord by helicopter. You can fly over the most active glacier in the world.

*Hikes. Enjoy a nice and easy but still very impressive walk near the Ilulissat Icefjord center. For a bigger challenge hike the vast stretches of highland behind Ilulissaat. Take a guide.

*Kayak to icebergs with a professional guide.

*Try a whale safari. Summer is the perfect time.

*Dog sledding. Great experience in winter. Mind: Sporty, not relaxing.
