Many people are fascinated by the rich and the famous, but only a few get the chance to really sneak into the world of the superrich. A one hour drive from Italy´s capital Rome near the coastal town of Ladispoli there is a closed door that would open to a huge garden if, well if you are a guest of La Posta Vecchia. This small 19-rooms and suites heritage hotel dating back to the 17th century is build at the site of an ancient villa of a rich Roman and it used to be the italian luxury house of the once richest man in the world: Oil-tycoon Jean Paul Getty. For the younger readers: You may know the movie: “All The Money In The World” depicting Getty who did not want to pay ransom for his kindapped grandson. So one reason why you would like to stay here at least for once is to swim in the magnificient indoor pool of the richest man in the world (in the 60ies and 70ies), sit in his drawing room and enjoy one of the suites or rooms of his residence where he had invited numerous women. But forget about Getty. Today La Posta Vecchia is also popular among well off Romans for events or a weekend escape. The lesson for tourists: avoid weekends if possible. The rooms are spacious and uniquely decorated with Renaissance furnishings, paintings and antique tapestries though the whole property would need some refurbishment. On the other hand until today you can really get the feel for Getty. There is of course a restaurant and its great to have dinner at the terrace in the evening watching the sea. Two other good reasons in addition to the “Richest man in the world” appeal: The seaport of Civitavecchia is just half an hour (34 km) away which makes La Posta Vecchia a perfect add on for a cruise. And secondly the airport of Fiumicino is 35 minutes away (42 km). So after exploring Rome you could add e.g. two nights at La Posta Vecchia at the sea before you fly home. All in all: a unique experience. A member of Leading Hotels in the world.
