Mount Nelson Hotel (Belmond)

Capetown

South Africa

You enter through an impressive gate and follow a palm-lined driveway amidst a green oasis and there it is: the legendary Mount Nelson Hotel, opened in 1899, that has seen legions of famous people until today. Perched at the foot of the iconic Table Mountain it is just a beautiful pink painted property with 198 rooms and suites in a perfect location. If you cross the road you enter the socalled Company Gardens, a park that invites you to a stroll along museums right into the buzzling center of the town. Through the back entrance is Kloof street where a lot of restaurants and bars wait to be explored. And inside? Expect English colonial décor and high Belmond standards. The Mount Nelson hotel has differen “wings”: the original building, extensions, garden huts (suits) and a wing that was once the Helmsley Hotel. Every wing has a completely different feel.
The most modern one is the East wing that was completely refurbished. The rooms there are designed by London-based interior designer Inge Moore.Great: the Librisa Spa. Foodwise the Lord Nelson Restaurant is the flagship place. Expect lights resembling twinkling stars, an elegant setting and great food by the kitchen teams led by Chef Rudi Liebenberg. There is also a Chef´s table. For more casual dining there is the Oasis Bistro. All in all a great experience. And don´t miss the Afternoon Tea in the lounge!

Endless wisdom in a nutshell

Best Time
March to may, september to november: good weather, fewer crowds, lower prices. However if you are adding a safari experience: may to october have perfect weather conditions for wildlife viewing.
Best Rate
From 300 Euros in low season, from 350 all year round.

Indicative – subject to change.

Best Room
In general: the east wing is more modern. Rooms: Take a deluxe room with a balcony on a higher floor, 32 sqm. Standard rooms are just 25 sqm, have smaller bathrooms and may lack a view. Suites: The Cottage suites are great and close to a pool. Hight of luxury: Presidential Suite. Our choice: Deluxe Junior suites, 42 sqm, balcony, great views.
Getting there
A limousine transfer from the airport will take only 15 minutes and cost you around 60 Euro. By taxi 15 to 20 Euro.
Best Excursion

There are four main wine areas in South Africa: Constantia, Paarl, Worcester, and lovely Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch is just 50km East of Cape Town. Take a full day winetour to Stellenbosch either in a group or as a private tour – as you like. Simply a great experience.

Good for Children
Yes. Toddler care, teenager room, heated pool, a huge garden.
Value for Money
This is an iconic hotel but it is not overpriced.
Worst Thing
Some rooms would need more refurbishment. Bathrooms in standard rooms are small. Planet restaurant is closed on sundays (or closed at all due to the pandemic).

Breathtaking Hotels.
