Soneva Kiri

Koh Kood

Thailand

Imagine Robinson Crusoe with a butler and five-star amenities. Imagine a village of 35 villas running from one to five rooms in a tropical forest either on a beach or embedded by green nature. Imagine a lot of privacy and a 24 hour butler service with male or female butlers called Mr. or Mrs. Friday. Imagine a complimentary white motorboat that will take you to a private beach, called North beach, with deck chairs, and friendly service. Imagine – in addition to the main restaurant – an extraordinary Thai restaurant called Khun Benz in a sea inlet. All that is Soneva Kiri, a resort opened in 1995 on one of the least developed islands in Thailand called Koh Kood. It was created by Sonu Shivdasani, son of a rich Indian-british family and his wife Eva Malmstrom, a former Swedish top-model. Their idea was “intelligent luxury”, a kind of green barefoot luxury without the shiny look of perfection, without french mineral water bottles and 100 cheeses from Strasbourg on a tropical island. The result is much loved by many Soneva fans though some guests will also be disappointed as e.g. Soneva Kiri does not boast the same kind of five star luxury as e.g. a Four Seasons property. Our resume: a great but pricey experience with a Robinson Crusoe feel and a wonderful uncrowded serviced beach. Come by aircraft: an adventure in itself! The Soneva resort group consists of three properties (two in the Maldives) plus a luxury yacht.

Endless wisdom in a nutshell

Best Time
January. Best weather and rates a bit lower than at Xmas and New Year´s eve. In General: Avoid June to August if you don`t like rain (could be 24 rainy days a month), though rates are great. Good: November till April: the dry season. For budget smart luxury travellers: may (weather not perfect, but not bad either and lower rates)
Best Rate
Around 750 Euros in lowest season

Indicative – subject to change.

Best Room
Villa 14. This is the one where the owners stay when they visit their property.
Getting there
Best way: an 80 minutes flight from Suvarnabhumi International Airportin Bangkok by hotel´s private plane which lands on a little neighbouring island, then a short trip by the hotel´s own speedboat. Alternative: By bus (5-6 hours) or domestic flight (one Hour) from Bangkok to Trat, then by public ferry to Koh Kood, then taxi.
Best Excursion

Take a trip to Angkor Wat by the private hotel`plane (just 260 kilometers, around 550 Euros incl. return), a great experience. If you stay in Koh Kood: Yi Ki Trek, a nice waterfall where you can swim, too. Within the hotel: an exclusive treepod dining. Or: A day on a wooden fishing boat going to seven beaches. Snorkel and swim as you like.

Good for Children
Absolutely. There is a children´s den in the shape of big manta and a wide range of children´s activities is offered, babysitting too. And North beach boasts shallow and calm waters, perfect for kids, too.
Value for Money
We think: Yes absolutely, given the unique Robinson Crusoe luxury feel. But it is debatable: If you expect a michelin-starred gourmet chef ( though Benz restaurant is great) and luxury furniture you might be disappointed given the rates. But most guests love it and usually stay for a week. We learned about a Canadian who stayed for a month.
Worst Thing
If the private plane is not available its a long way from Bangkok. Pool can be surprisingly cool.
